FAQ Grade 9 Project - Wind Turbine Feasibility Study

Frequently Asked Questions for the Grade 9 term 2 project;

1) When is the due date for the proposal?
The due date for the proposal to the board will be made when there has been sufficient research done to warrant the compliling of a proposal done from the grade 9 feasibility study.

2) Is this project for real?
Yes, in fact Mr. Simpson is quite excited by the idea and has assured me that should the feasibility study be viable that it would receive a serious consideration from the members of the board.

3) How will I be marked for the two research topics I have chosen?
The idea is to follow the industry guidelines for what is considered apropriate for a feasibility study in the modern day South African corporate environment. In essence it will be Outcomes Based Education which is practically applied via a marking rubric. The pupil must research and practice how things would actually happen if they were in the actual corporate environment which sometimes requires finding out what the standards are and how real companies tackle the feasibility study. A great deal of intra personal reaction is also required to dovetail the pupils research with the other research areas.

4) Can explain some of our research with the use of a timeline and/or graphs?
Yes

5) Im confused, what is this project actually about and what must we do?
Part one:
The project is about using the technological process as a problem solving method to address the issue of the carbon footprint that CHC leaves due to its high use of electricity, over R45000 per month in 2009. The more we reduce the electricity, the less coal has to be burnt at the coal power station to produce power. Mr Buys has suggested that we investigate the erection of a wind turbine.
Part two:
You need to choose two of the areas of research regarding the wind trubine feasibility study you would like to be involved in. These should reflect as closely as possible your career that you would like to pursue in your future. You also need to pay attention to the problems and their possible sollutions as explained in the 11th hour dvd. From the result of the feasibility study a proposal will be drawn up and presented to the school board.

6) How do I present my research?
Your research will marked according to industry standard which means that Mr. Buys would mark your project by asking how well would this research be received by a paying customer/client in the real corporste environment. This means that you would need to find out what the standards are form companies who are actually doing business for real.
e.g. Finance would require the research/student to look at how real companies make decisions according to cost and expence statements. The research would need to be presented in the same way.
