Part 1 - Local Bridges:
1) The Moretlele Gardens Bridge (The flying Spiral)
a) Close to Gauteng / Limpopo border
b) Aesthetically strong
c) Spiral provides reinforcing similar to cross bracing a truss.
d) Solves problem of community having to cross a dangerous four lane road.
e) Subway was previously used but is dark and dangerous.
f) Scale model was used to explain bridge to community.
g) Community involved in all stages from design to construction.
h) Local contractors were trained how to do the work and to tender.
i) Local community very proud of their part in the bridge.
j) 2.5m wide
2) The Nelson Mandela Bridge
a) In Newtown Jhb.
b) Cable stayed bridge crossing the main Jhb. trainyard.
c) Rail traffic was never disrupted during construction.
d) Vertical cables transfer the load to the looping cables stretching from the towers.
e) Aesthetically beautiful.
3) The Desmond and Leah Tutu Bridge
a) Links St John's College with Roedean School in the Wilds. (Houghton)
b) Cable stayed and arched.
c) safety railings add to appeal.
4) The Wilds Pedestrian Bridge.
a) The purpose of the bridge is to enjoy the view of "The Wilds" reserve safely.
b) Has a spiral ramp to accomodate elderly and dissabled persons.
5) The Monte Casino Beam Bridge
Supports the Witkoppen road highway overpass.
6) The R28 Pedestrian Bridge
Long access ramps.
7) The Crocodile River Low Water Bridge
Subject to periodic flooding.
8) The Crocodile River Suspension Bridge
a) In times of heavy rain the low water bridge is flooded and pedestrians must use this suspension bridge.
b) Not very stable and can only take a limited amount of people.
